Fife is a key character alongside Kael Cavilo, and her storyline is one of the most important aspects of the book. Without her, the book will have no push or direction. As i previously mentioned in another post, Kael himself is not a particularly interesting character, but the people who surround him are – this is one of those examples.
She will also act as the love interest for Kael – but i wanted her to be so much more than that, (when i originally wrote my first draft she was never intended to be the love interest, but i changed it because – why not!)
I’ve already spoken about how to build a character in a previous post. In short, i used my own personality/traits and spread them between my characters, and with Fife it was slightly different because she was not relatable for me (being a woman and an experienced thief).
So how did i create her if she was not relatable? Well sometimes real life people have a big influence on me – some big role models include my sisters, my mum and some other strong-willed women I’ve had the pleasure of working with.
Let me tell you about her past:

Fife was raised by a man named Peter (who is now dying of an unknown illness), and he was a good friend of her parents until they abandoned her. Peter was not going to let Fife grow up without a family, so he was the one to take her under his wing. Growing up with her much younger friend Kriss, she used to cause havoc, stealing from lords and swindling drunk fools of the tavern – she made a good living out of this. One day, after a few close calls, she had decided that that wasn’t the route she was going to take in life.
She didn’t know her heritage, but she always had dreams that would reveal themselves as truth, until one day she has a dream about Kael – a man she had never met. The ghost of her past tells her to follow the man, because he is the key to a coming war. The vague dreams begin to infuriate her as she blindly follows the path of one man she knows nothing about.
And that’s a simple background without giving too many spoilers.
So already we have a few factors into what makes this character interesting:
- She has the gift of foresight
- We don’t know her heritage, where she comes from
- Her past of thievery and mischief
- Her involvement with Kael and his path in the war (why has her dream picked him as the key/saviour of Eyrador?)
In coming posts i will go over some other main characters that will join Kael & Fife on their journey through Eyrador.
